The Department of Molecular Physiology (headed by Frank Kirchhoff) is part of the Center of Integrative Physiology and Molecular Medicine (CIPMM) and belongs to the Medical Faculty of the University of Saarland (USAAR). The CIPMM started its operation in 2015 by combining the former Institutes of Physiology and Biophysics in a new research building.

The research of the Molecular Physiology is well known for their work on the mechanisms of neuron-glia interactions in health and disease. Their transgenic mice with cell-type specific fluorescent protein expression and inducible gene deletion are used in many research labs. Important is (1) their description of intrinsic motilities of astrocytes and microglia by two-photon imaging, and (2) their analysis of the role of glial transmitter receptors.
